WE OPEN THE DOORS TO OUR FIRST NAGNATA AUSTRALIAN FLAGSHIP STORE

We open the doors to our first Nagnata Australian flagship store in Byron Bay’s Jonson Lane precinct. A culmination of the Nagnata world, the space is a celebration of artistry and movement.

In a truly collaborative experience, Nagnata’s Creative Director Laura-May Gibbs worked closely with interior designers Pattern Studio to bring the brand’s vision to life; hand-drawn sketches created from Gibbs’ couch at home were the basis upon which an instinctive design process unfolded, creating a gallery-like space where the clothes and colour speak as art. Nagnata’s maverick-spirit prompted Pattern to look towards creatives who shared a similarly progressive quality for fitout inspiration. The striking works of Hungarian architect Antti Lovag and French ceramicist Valentine Schlegel offered a wealth of inspiration for the design of the interior.

The store’s design is anchored in a refinement of materials sourced from the natural world, with elements of nature creating a sense of harmonious balance and serenity. Paying homage to the brand’s eco-conscious sensibilities, everything is uniquely crafted and customised; a hand-carved timber pillar by Byron-based artist Lex Williams sits with an Italian marble table hand-crafted in Sydney in contrasting planes of stone to create an abstract interpretation of Yin-Yang, paying homage to yogic foundations of balance, polarity and harmony. Further fostering a sense of community, locally sourced rugs from Byron-based business PAMPA adorn the floors.

The spirit of the brand comes to life with a custom-made lounge utilising a Raf Simons luxurious plush velvet fabric, placed centre of store and offering a space to cultivate community and discussion - or just hang. Exploring the relationship between architecture and movement, curvaceous forms, fluid lines and shapes offer a sculptural journey. Worldly influences synergistically blend with architectural elements, with Moroccan-inspired change rooms, Texan Adobe plastered-rendered finishes and hints of Japanese wabi-sabi design.

The store will carry the brands’ complete core fashion and SAMA genderless collections, along with accessories and store exclusives. Expanding beyond the collections and into lifestyle and living, Nagnata curates an array of art, design and fashion books on offer by friends including Rob Tennant, LOVE WANT, Kate Bellm and co-director Hannah and partner Nick Stenmark's illustrated book for families of premature babies 'Your little head start' along with their Ayu x Nagnata candle.

Offsetting the raw elements, the store features cutting-edge LED linear lighting that can instantly bathe the entire space in a wash of coloured light, transforming this serene sanctuary into an electrifying, energetic environment. The front window display offers an artistic view into the brand’s world with hand-plastered abstract body forms adorned with Nagnata knits.

“I’ve really enjoyed the process of building a physical world for Nagnata, further exploring our brand’s identity and how that translates through the design of the space. It felt important to lay the roots down on Bundjalung Country, where the brand was first established and where I call home. The Byron Flagship Store will lay the foundation for our retail expansion - and allow us to have an interactive space to cultivate community, connect and of course, to shop!” - says Founder Laura-May Gibbs.
